What Really real is not real..
I was thinking this phrase " what really real is not real" which my school teacher says too often. The following are some words which I come across every now and then but every time in a different context without implying the really real meaning....
PERSONALITY
The word personality means an individual's set of behaviours , traits and attitudes which are situational in nature and which makes a person distinct from other. This word is derived from a latin word " Persona" meaning mask which is not a physical one but a social mask which defines our behaviour , ways of thinking, reacting, socializing .Unfortunately I found this word being used very commonly in a wrong context referring to an individual's 'outer, tangible, visible' thing than the' inner, invisible, intangible' thing. Many a time I have seen well educated people saying things like "his personality does not suit the position" what they actually mean is his "appearance" and not his traits or attitudes.
MARKETING
This poor word,as the world has become a big market has been used in all possible assumptions with its meaning ranging from buying, selling, advertising, aggressive selling. Some of the important conversation I have heard with the word" Marketing" at several instances are:
1.A cook in one of the restaurant I have worked once said to me that "our restaurant does not do proper marketing that's why the sale is declining"--Wow!! this guy who finds it difficult to do any arithmetical calculations involving figures more than 10 ( as unfortunately he has only 10 fingers) and who takes at least 122 seconds to fix his signature on the payslip is talking this time on Marketing the restaurant.Later what I came to know is that he is referring to buying vegetables and fish from the market.
2.Few years ago,One of my "learned" friend who returned India from an European city after a year of work said me that he spent half a day in Dubai while transiting basically to do a lot of "marketing".I was feeling so little in front of him when he was using such a BIG word. What he really meant is he bought cameras, perfumes, chocolates, under wears etc., in Dubai that according to him is Marketing in Dubai.Oh my God! why don't you save this poor word from people like this.
3. This time it was a professor who while explaining the meaning of the word" Marketing " said it is a process by which a seller persuade a buyer and given an example as Marketing is selling a bald man a beautiful ivory hair brush whether or not he requires it.May Philip Kotler and his ardent followers forgive my professor for his mistake. What my professor said is Selling which is totally different from Marketing.
4. Very common in the corporate world to see big bosses using the word " marketing" synonymous to Advertising and Publicity which are components of Marketing and not marketing itself.
I owe a lot to all these characters who have forced me to pursue a Masters degree in Marketing Management basically to know what it is and surprisingly I have completed my studies ( don't ask how many years it took)....
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
It is most commonly used to refer a person's fluency in a particular language ( say English). Many interviewers say that a person has good communication skill just by interacting with them for 3 minutes after being impressed that they speak Good English. If speaking fluently in English is "communication skills" then more than 80 percent of the world population is poor communicators. Then the ancient Romans, Arabs, Chinese, Indians,Greeks and Egyptians who have contributed loads and loads of intellectual wealth are 'very poor' in their communication. I have a friend by name Ronaldo from an Asian country who has problem speaking fluently in English and pronouncing English words correctly and unfortunately he is seen as 'poor in communication'.But I found him highly competent and a good communicator to explain whatever he thinks using his body gestures and signs. For me he is a successful communicator as his ideas, views and messages are exchanged with others in some form or other.
Again I have to say the phrase...."Whatever popular need not be correct and whatever correct need not be popular.."
