A Word and an Unforgettable person

We remember many words and in most cases, their meanings, usage, pronunciations as well. But how often we remember those who introduced a particular word to us? Not that often, unless either the word or the person is so remarkable or in rare cases, when both are.

1. The word :

   - Ms. Sumathy( in pic below) introduced me the word "Etiquette" almost 3 decades ago when I was her student learning communicative English as a part of my graduate studies in hospitality management. When she first explained the meaning of the word, it was hard for me to comprehend and later with examples, she engraved the word deep in to my thoughts that every time I come across the word, I am able to relive that moment when I heard it for the first time.

   - As a trainer, professional in the hospitality industry, whenever I explain, train my colleagues on lobby etiquette, telephone etiquette, service etiquette, business etiquette and so on, I remember her explanation unlike that for any other word.

2. The Unforgettable Personality:

   - A well dressed lady who gives a perfect blend of tradition and contemporary touch to her outfits. One of the remarkable aspects of Ms. Sumathy is her universally likeable personality.

   - It's rare to find anyone who has a negative opinion of her, a testament to her ability to connect with people from all walks of life from the chairman of the college to her colleagues to students to the helpers working there.

- As students, we all had our favourite lecturers, the hated ones, gossips, back bitings about some lecturers but never  I have came across anyone who had ever felt or said anything bad about her.

- Though she comes from an affluent family, with a strong nexus with the power centre of Tamilnadu politics, hardly anyone could sense that in her interactions which was always down to earth and humble.

A Champion of the Tamil Language:

   - Except for a small bunch of students that were fortunate to attend her English classes, and those who have listened to her parliamentary speeches and enjoy her eloquence in English,Ms. Sumathy is popular with the masses for her passion, mastery over the Tamil language.

- She is popularly known as Dr.Thamizachi Thangapandian and has authored many books, delivers thoughtful speeches, scripted dialogues for movies, penned lyrics for Tamil movies including the soul stirring song "Pogum Paadhai.." from the movie Pisasu.

A  Political Journey:

   - Transitioning from education, literature to politics, Dr. Thamizachi Thangapandian has embarked on a new chapter in her life.

   - As a Member of Parliament, she has garnered both praise and criticism for her and her party's performance, reflecting the complexities of politics.

- I follow her on social media but do not have any contacts personally as I don't expect her to recognise me among the hundreds of students who has attended her lectures many years ago.

Dr.Thamizachi Thangapandian is a name that has left an indelible mark on the lives of many, from her early days as an English language lecturer to her current role as a Member of Parliament.

This blog post celebrates her multifaceted journey through the lens of those who have been fortunate enough to know her.
