Gratitude, just on simple acts- nothing extraordinary

We often search for reasons to be grateful in the big things -career milestones, financial stability, wealth, a perfect relationship, or life-changing moments.

But what if gratitude lies in something far more ordinary… something we barely think about or something we are ashamed of talking about?

Something as simple as… using the toilet.

Think about it.

If you’re able to wake up, walk into a clean, private restroom, and go about your day with a healthy digestive system, you’re already more fortunate than millions.

Some struggle with chronic constipation, spending time, money, and energy just to feel “normal.”

Others deal with frequent discomfort, where urgency replaces control and have to make multiple visit to a toilet or live with the scare of not finding one while travelling, working or just stepping out of the home.

Many live with mobility challenges, needing assistance for even the most basic bodily functions.

And there are those who are bedridden, relying entirely on caregivers for something we take for granted every single day.

On our side, there are hundreds of millions of people (roughly 11% of the world population) that has no digestive diseases, no mobility issues but don't have a clean toilet to relieve themselves and has to do 'that work' in open spaces like bushes, railway tracks, roadsides without any privacy or sanitation.

Worse among these challenges is the plight of those millions living in extreme poverty somewhere near us, sharing the planet with us without having enough to eat or access to clean drinking water. They don't have anything to eat or drink, and their bodies don't require excreting the waste after absorbing the nutrients.

Yet, for most of us, this simple act happens quietly, effortlessly, and without a second thought.

No applause. No acknowledgment. No gratitude.

The next time, you are able to walk to the toilet, use it without any discomforts and have the privacy to feel safe, do remember that you're having something that's a luxury, an unimaginable dream for millions around you.

Perhaps that’s where we miss the point.

Gratitude isn’t always about extraordinary blessings.

It’s about recognising the extraordinary comfort hidden in ordinary moments.

Because sometimes, a good day…is simply a day where everything works as it should.
