Myths about Mathematics & Yoga

As I am writing this blog post, the world, especially India will be gearing up to celebrate the International Day of Yoga over this weekend - 21st June 2020.Yoga is an ancient practice of exercise both for the physical and mental well being like any other health regimen. But it has been packaged and promoted in such a way that it is a panacea for all health issues right from impotency to infertility to cardio vascular illness to COVID 19.

I keep coming across photos, videos on social media with people of different age groups performing various Yoga postures and projected that flexibility of the body is equal to 100% fitness.Being a hotel employee over 2 decades, I have seen loads of drunk people at Bars and clubs who, under the influence of alcohol can twist their bodies in many unimaginable way without having an iota of knowledge about yoga😆

Mathematics, an interesting or the most hated course in schools can be compared to Yoga.Back in the school days, our minds have been conditioned by the education system that life is going to be too difficult without knowing Phythagoras theorem or Integral Calculus or Trigonometry. But many years later, we have been living comfortably without remembering any one of those theorems with the basics of calculations (additions, percentages, divisions, multiplications) and for doing all these we also have the Excel spreadsheets 😊 .Perhaps, those pursuing their higher studies or teachers of mathematics would be remembering and continuously updating their knowledge on those stuffs but not others.

It is important for us to be flexible as we grow older and as we start putting on weight due to physical inactivity.Whatever suits you - swimming, cycling, brisk walking, stretching, performing Namaaz ( muslim prayer), chanting mantras, meditation, Cardio work outs at Gym, Zumba are good enough to practice towards the physical and mental well being.

We need flexibility to climb a flight of stairs, to jump on a boat, to get on buses or trains, to walk a couple of kms when required, to sit on the WC and get up - especially the Indian style WC 😆  and do remember that your ability to do all these does not ensure you 100% fitness.

No need to twist your body to bring your "base on your face" to prove your fitness. That is for the Yoga teachers or for people looking to have some limelight.  Let's relax- stay fit.
