Ramadan-Fasting or Feasting??

Once again, Muslims all over the world are happy for being blessed with another Ramadan, the holy month during their life time. The obligatory ritual of fasting from dawn to dusk for a period of 30 days by refraining from eating , drinking , smoking, having sex  and so on. Fasting is a wonderful scientific and spiritual concept of cleansing the body and soul.On contrary to its very fundamental purpose to experience the hunger of the indigent, today Ramadan is becoming a season of feasting with rich, high calory, heavy foods before dawn ( Sahur) and at dusk ( Iftar) to compensate the lost meal during the day!! How funny!!

I have seen many people gaining weight during Ramadan instead of losing weight due to less food intake. The Iftars ,customarily used to have only Dates and fresh Juice or simply water is today a more fashionable lavish banquet where people show off their opulence and stuff themselves with everything as if there is no tomorrow!! It is common in all areas of the world with sizeable Muslim population to see special foods available during Ramadan, to see eateries being flocked by people after dusk. When you are expected to experience the hunger and pain of the poor and needy , don't make mockery of the excellent concept as poor and needy don't get to eat or waste as  as a matter of choice.

Few days ago, I was reading a message via facebook where a Muslim scholar from Saudi Arabia while attending a religious discourse on Ramadan at Somalia emotionally broken and literally in tears when asked very innocently by a Somali Muslim as "Is it  acceptable according to Islam to observe Ramadan fasting by not having any food for Sahur and for Iftaar as we are practising this due to non availability of food".This should at least shake the conscience of all those who eat too much ( read as hog) and consider Ramadan as a "feasting" month instead of "fasting" month.
The rule of Thumb is:
You have not been fasting as required if :
  • there is no weight loss or you are looking bloated.
  • Your personal food bill during Ramadan is more than usual despite skipping one major meal
I have lost 2 kgs in the last 15 days and people around me are saying I am looking dull and weak which means I am not feasting.Happy to hear this !!
May God Bless you all to follow this concept!!
